Desde los trece años de edad, Rinpoche practicó dzogchen bajo la guía de maestros de ambas escuelas del Tíbet, la Bön y la Budista, incluyendo (del Bön) a Su Santidad Lungtok Tenpai Nyima, Lopon Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche, Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche y Geshe Yungdrung Namgyal. Desde su temprana adolescencia hasta su juventud, Lama Tenzin fue criado como un hijo por su maestro raíz, Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, hoy reverenciado como el maestro con mayor antigüedad dentro la tradición Bön. Erudito consumado en las tradiciones textuales Bön Budistas de filosofía, exégesis y debate, en 1986 Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche completó un curso de once años de estudios tradicionales en la Escuela Dialéctica Bön del Monasterio Menri, donde recibió su grado de Geshe, equivalente a un doctorado en Filosofía de las universidades occidentales. Luego de graduarse, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche trabajó en la Biblioteca de Obras Tibetanas y Archivos en Dharamsala, India.
